Council Approves Freese Projects, Rental Fees

City Council gave final approval for several projects to be funded by Freese grants during its April 11 meeting. The projects are:

  • $139,137 to City of Galion for tennis court repairs
  • $60,000 to City of Galion for installing a restroom at Amann Reservoir
  • $5,250 to Galion YMCA for starting block upgrades at the YMCA pool
  • $12,750 to Galion Historical Society for upgrading public restrooms at Historic Grace Church

The latter project was added that evening. Marcia Yunker, board president of GHS, spoke about the project during the meeting. She explained GHS would like to make the restrooms handicap accessible because it is already installing a handicap ramp at the church in order to allow more people to see the inside of the church and attend events.

The third reading passed 6-0 that evening. Council member Tom Fellner was absent. The projects were presented to the Egbert M. Freese Foundation on April 12 for funding approval.

Ord. 2017-15 updated rental fees for city-owned facilities:

  • East Park Cabin - remove the deposit requirement and keep the charge at $55.
  • Amann Shelter – set the fee at $55.
  • East Park Spray Ground – regular hours of operation are 12-5 p.m. Rentals will be available from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., and 5-7 p.m. $100 for two hours.
  • Depot Pavilion – set the fee at $75.

The third reading passed unanimously. The new fees will take effect May 11.

Res. 2017-8 appointed Heath Watkins as the City’s representative to the Egbert M. Freese Foundation in order to fill an expired term. This item passed as an emergency.

In other business, Council member Shirley Clark recognized Eric Webber and other volunteers for planting trees on the south side of Amann Reservoir. They are also building additional benches to be placed at the disc golf course.
