Depot Pavilion Update

The Depot Pavilion project continues to make progress. Since a groundbreaking ceremony held Dec. 3, the Galion Service Department completed the site work and Weithman Brothers constructed the building frame. Doors, windows and shingles have been installed over the last two weeks.

The pavilion is a rectangular, 1,205-square-foot building. It will feature a fireplace and be enclosable with a wraparound overhang. Its architecture and color scheme will mimic that of the Big Four Depot. It will be used as a venue for community events such as live music, historical re-enactments, and educational programming, as well as fund raising events and private rentals.

This project is being funded with a $200,000 grant from the Ohio Cultural Facilities Commission, and up to $30,000 in city funds. Grant criteria required a project that would be complete and open to the public at the end of construction. It was planned by the City of Galion in conjunction with Galion Depot, Inc., a local non-profit.

The pavilion is scheduled to open in May of 2017. A grand opening event will be held Saturday, May 20, beginning with a paint day for local artists. Those interested in participating or submitting art work should contact Carol Kable at 419-468-2944.

The event will also include a ceremony, art display, wet paint sale, live auction, kids’ activities, walking tours, and live performances. The community is invited to enjoy the activities and help support future Depot projects. More details about the event to follow.

Galion Depot, Inc., has also launched a campaign to help pay for tables and chairs to be used at the pavilion. Gift suggestions are $70 for a table, $25 for a chair or $100 for four chairs, and $160 for a table and set of chairs. Gifts may be sent to: Galion Depot, Inc, PO Box 865, Galion. The pavilion project represents the first step in a multi-phase effort to rehabilitate the Depot and make this historic building an asset once again. Next steps include outdoor improvements and the development of a master plan for the Depot (which includes preliminary engineering and cost estimates).
